Margaret Jones is hanged for witchcraft.
June 14, 1648
The Charlestown resident, midwife, and lay healer, she is hanged on Boston Common. The first of four women executed for witchcraft in Boston, Jones was convicted of putting a fatal spell on a neighbor’s cow. Her husband, Thomas Jones attempts to leave Boston on board the Welcome on July 5, 1648. But, according to John Winthrop, the ship “in calm weather fell a rolling and continued so about 12 hours,” until Jones is arrested and removed from the ship.
